What is Web Maintance?

Web maintance consists of using the same tools & techniques as Web Design. Generally it involves making updates to content, for example a news website adding a new story or a cooking website adding a new receipe. It can also include minor changes to how a web page is layed out or if your website was created by someone else and needs to be updated to the latest web standards.

What are web standards?

Web standards are standards that ensure proper interoperability, accessibility and usability of web pages and web sites. It also helps to ensure search engines can propperly browse your site and categorize it which may help bring more visitors that are interested in the content of your site.

Using web standards helps to ensure interoperability means webpages should be compatible and uniform on most computers, Mac or PC, and on the wide range of popular web browsers. This helps to build a “brand” by which visitors come to associate with your site or companies objective.

Making sure your website is accessible and has the highest usibility possible also helps to ensure a higher number of visitors returning to your site. For instance, if a site has a bunch of flashing or moving graphics and images all the time it can be distracting and in some cases may give people headaches. Also if someone who is visually impared visits your site and it's not built to the latest web standards they may find it hard or impossible to navigate your site.

Green Tips

If you use a watering can for your plants, keep an empty milk jug near the kitchen sink. Instead of pouring water from a drinking glass down the drain when it's no longer fresh pour the water in the jug, then next time you water your plants use the water from the jug.
